
Mālama ʻĀina Community Cleanup
Join us as we care for Kapālama Kai at our annual Mālama ‘Āina Community Cleanup during Earth Month and Native Hawaiian Plant Month. The event provides an opportunity to gather, share kuleana to mālama ʻāina, and make a significant impact. Gather your ʻohana and friends for a morning of service!

Limited space may be available for walk-ins on the day of the event. All walk-ins must register at the check-in table. Shirts and bentos will be provided to walk-ins on a first-come basis while supplies last.
- Help to clean up the neighborhood streets.
Volunteers will receive cleanup supplies including trash bags and gloves. Walk along designated routes and pick up ‘ōpala and recyclables. - Make genki balls to restore Kapālama Canal.
Genki balls are special mud balls that contain Effective MicroorganismsⓇ to digest sludge and remove pollutants from soil and water without negatively impacting or altering the natural ecosystem. - Learn about kukui (candlenut tree) including its uses and Hawaiian cultural significance.
Nearly every part of kukui has a historic use – from being a source of light to medicine and dye. Today, it is recognized as the state tree of Hawaiʻi.
Please come prepared to spend the morning outdoors! We recommend bringing:
- Water in a reusable bottle
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- A hat
- Sunglasses or protective eyewear

Community Cleanup
Mālama Kapālama Kai by cleaning up ‘ōpala in the area. Put any recyclable containers in a separate collection bag. Please bring back all ‘ōpala and recyclable containers for weighing and drop-off at 855C Mo‘owa‘a Street by 9:30 a.m.
9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Kukui Education, Genki Ball Making and Bentos
Return any borrowed cleanup supplies and dive into the second half of the event!
- Hear from experts and learn about the fascinating science of the kukui plant and genki balls.
- Make genki balls with your ‘ohana and friends.
- Pick up your complimentary bento.
Look for the black and green Kapālama Kai pop-up tents outside the warehouse at 855C Mo‘owa‘a Street, Honolulu, HI 96817 (Google Maps).
Free parking is available on a first-come basis in the parking lot around the corner on Mo‘okaula Street. Drive mauka on Mo‘owa‘a Street, take a right on Mo‘okaula Street and look for the parking sign.
Street parking is also available on the surrounding streets.
